The European Train Control System (ETCS) is the signalling and control component of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). It is a replacement for legacy train protection systems and designed to replace the many incompatible safety systems currently used by European railways. ERTMS Regional concept is the outcome of a close co-operation between UIC and the Swedish Infrastructure Manager Banverket since 1998. This concept aims at defining a full track side system for regional lines based on and fully compatible with ERTMS system. ERTMS and GSM-R rules are published in the Operation and Traffic Management TSI. ERA plays the role of system design authority for ERTMS.
